The Oldest Street Trees in the Metro
Lennox was settled in 1879 and incorporated on 19 May 1889, named after Ben Lennox, private secretary to the general manager of the Milwaukee Railroad. The 2026 population is around 2,684, up from 2,423 at the 2020 census. It sits about 20 miles southwest of Sioux Falls in Lincoln County.
That founding date is the whole story for trees here. While Harrisburg and Tea are dealing with trees planted in the last fifteen years, Lennox’s older residential streets carry timber that has been standing for the better part of a century. Those trees are magnificent and they are also, structurally, at the end of their design life.
The work here is almost entirely the opposite of what a new subdivision needs.

In Crooks, four years in, most ash are past the point where treatment achieves anything. In Lennox the infestation is young, which means a much larger share of local ash trees are still in treatable condition. Trunk injection protects a tree that still has a working vascular system, and right now most Lennox ash still do.
